Calicut

Looking under the overlooked -Aastha Mehta I had the chance of visiting Calicut in the winters of 2018 on a college trip and i must say that it was an unforgettable experience. Here's my story of how i explored the city and found things which i can never find anywhere else. A picture i took at the varakkal beach. While packing my bags i made sure to check the weather because in my experience the weather of kerala can change any second. It was funny how i was walking under a bright sun and after 5 minutes it started raining! I got to know the weather was pretty warm so i packed all my summer clothes in December. What an irony! Our bus journey began from bangalore and i slept peacefully through the night, waking up in between to see the landscape outside. We were living just 500 meters from the beach is what i heard. I was pretty excited to know what the city was about.  We got a brief about Calicut from a man named Vinod, who was madly in love with the city. He had

Yelahanka

Old Town Yelahanka -Aastha   Mehta In a small corner of Bengaluru, lies Yelahanka, now divided into old town and new town. While moving from the new town towards the old town, we start seeing rural elements. Small bylanes, full of people busy with their routines who work hard every day to make ends meet. We reach a temple, one of the plenty located in the old town and see that it has many stones slabs with snakes on them. The god they worship is the snake god, along with Vishnu, shiva and subramanium (or god kartikeya). I notice tiny bangles kept below the stone by married women. The people pray around the stones by going in circles and sometimes pouring milk on the stones. The small temple is located in the courtyard of a house, with peepal and curry tree also being worshiped.  With my area of research being culture as well as folk tales we then go to another temple, seeing some stories. I observe that the people have a specific attire for the temple. The ladies wear jas

Breaking the bird’s eye view- Hesaraghatta - Aastha Mehta Away from the city life of Bengaluru, a peaceful place to visit is Hesaraghatta, just some miles away. The society is agrarian, which makes the landscape full of fields, small settlements and lakes. But people often come to visit places as a tourist, seeing things from above- the bird’s eye view,as I’d like to call it, and not looking closely. I try to assimilate myself in this beautiful place called Hesaraghatta, observing things closely rather than a view from the top. An important lake is the Hesaraghatta Lake itself. A man made reservoir created in 1894 across Arkavati river. It was built by K. Seshadri Iyer, the then Diwan of Mysore and M.C. Hutchins, the then Chief Engineer of Mysore. It was planned to store a three- years’s water supply to the city. The lake is huge and feels like it has the potential to supply water to bangalore. But when you see it there is not much water. The lake has been drying up in t
